Everybody seems to have mixed feelings about nitrous. Some think the first time you will use it you will blow your engine, and some feel invincible while using it speeding threw traffic not worried about the safety or the safety of others. But the truth is, yes it is safe to use in the right hands and with the proper modifications. This being said you can't add a nitrous system to your mom's 95 civic that has 300,000 miles on it and never went past 70, and expect nothing to happen. There are a couple add-ons that are not necessary but will greatly increase the safety of your engine. Also if its your first time running with nitrous don't start out with a big shot, use a smaller shot and once you feel comfortable using it then if you so choose go bigger.
There are two main types of nitrous systems, wet and dry systems.
Dry Nitrous Systems
A dry nitrous system injects nitrous directly into the engine but lets your cars ECU add the fuel which can be a little risky because if your ECU fails your engine could blow and you will be looking at some major internal engine repairs.
Wet Nitrous Systems
A wet nitrous kit is probably is the most used and safest nitrous system out there. These kits are different then dry kits because the injectors add both nitrous and fuel into the engine at the same time. This way your engine will never run to rich or to lean. However you will still need to tune your engine and be smart using your nitrous system. Personally i would recommend a wet kit for anyone new to nitrous for the added safety. Also when using nitrous for the first time done use a huge shot, use a smaller one until you tune your engine and are completely comfortable using nitrous.
There are many add ons to nitrous you can do to not only increase performance but decrease the chance of back fire and internal engine damage. Here a not only a list of the products but a short description of what it does. Now personally I like Zex nitrous kits and systems.
